Slovenia 1997 Freshwater Fish Stamp Series
In March 1997, Slovenia released a themed postage issue focused on endangered or threatened freshwater fish. This set consisted of four distinct stamps, also issued together in a miniature sheet (mini-sheet) format.
Individual Stamps in the Series:
Denomination | Scientific Name | Common Name (English) |
---|---|---|
12 t | Salmo marmoratus | Isonzo trout |
13 t | Zingel streber | Streber (Danube streber) |
80 t | Vimba vimba carinata | Vimba (Vimba vimba subspecies) |
90 t | Umbra krameri | European mudminnow |
- 12 t: Isonzo trout (Salmo marmoratus)
- 13 t: Streber (Zingel streber)
- 80 t: Vimba vimba carinata
- 90 t: European mudminnow (Umbra krameri)
All stamps were designed by Matjaž Učakar, printed at Delo Tiskarna in Ljubljana, using offset printing with comb perforation 14, luminescence watermark, and water-activated gum. Each denomination had a print run of around 150,000 units.
Miniature Sheet:
The four stamps were also issued together as a miniature sheet. While the designs are the same, a key difference is that on the mini-sheet the country name “Slovenija” is printed vertically, versus horizontally on the individual stamps.
Insights from Collectors
Though specific collector commentary on this series is sparse, these thematic wildlife issues—especially featuring native or endangered species—are generally well-regarded in philatelic circles for their educational and artistic value.
