Slovakia year 2014 Europa CEPT – Folk Music Instruments stamp MNH

In 2014, as part of the annual EUROPA CEPT series, Slovakia issued a stamp celebrating its rich musical heritage under the theme “National Musical Instruments.” The stamp focuses on the Three-Drone Bagpipes (Gajdy), a staple of Slovak folk music.

The Instrument: Slovak Bagpipes

The instrument depicted is a specific type of bagpipe traditionally used in northern and central Slovakia. Unlike many Western European bagpipes, the Slovak version is known for its “three-voice” sound, consisting of a melody pipe and two drone pipes.

In 2015, just a year after this stamp was issued, Bagpipe Culture in Slovakia was officially inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This includes not only the craftsmanship of the instrument (often decorated with goat-head carvings) but also the unique songs and dances associated with it.

Philatelic Significance

The EUROPA stamps are a joint issue among European postal administrations. Each year, a common theme is chosen to highlight shared culture. In 2014, the “Folk Music Instruments” theme was highly popular among collectors because of the vibrant, artistic depictions of traditional culture across the continent.
