Patriarch Pavle, born Gojko Stojčević on September 11, 1914, in Kućanci, Austria-Hungary (now Croatia), served as the 44th Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church from 1990 until his passing on November 15, 2009. Renowned for his humility and ascetic lifestyle, he was often referred to as a “saint who walked among us.”
Elected as Patriarch on December 1, 1990, Pavle led the Serbian Orthodox Church through the tumultuous period of the Yugoslav wars. Despite the challenges, he consistently advocated for peace and reconciliation among all ethnic groups. His tenure was marked by efforts to rebuild and restore churches damaged during the conflicts.
Patriarch Pavle was known for his modesty; he often walked or used public transportation, eschewing the trappings of his high office. His deep spirituality and commitment to a simple life endeared him to many, leading to widespread admiration and reverence.
