In 2022, Serbia issued a commemorative postage stamp to mark the 140th anniversary of diplomatic friendship between Serbia and Japan. The stamp features portraits of King Milan I Obrenović of Serbia and Emperor Meiji of Japan, with details of their historic correspondence from 1882 in the background. This exchange of letters between the two monarchs symbolized the beginning of bilateral relations between the countries. The stamp was designed by academic graphic artist Nadežda Skočajić and was released on March 30, 2022, accompanied by a first day cover showing the diplomatic correspondence details.
The relationship between Serbia and Japan has grown steadily over the years, with significant diplomatic and cultural exchanges, including visits by high-ranking officials such as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2018 and Serbian Prime Minister in 2019 for Emperor Naruhito’s enthronement. Contemporary relations continue to deepen in political, economic, and cultural spheres, underscoring mutual respect and cooperation
