Malaya states – Penang

Penang, a state in Malaysia, has a rich philatelic history dating back to its early days as part of the Straits Settlements, through Japanese occupation during World War II, and later as a member of the Federation of Malaya before becoming part of Malaysia.

From 1948 onwards, Penang began issuing its own stamps as part of the Federation of Malaya. Some notable series include the 1949-1952 set of 19 stamps (SG3-22), featuring various designs, which is available in both mint and used conditions. There are also unique stamps from the Japanese occupation period which are of particular interest to collectors.

A significant series is the 1960-1962 Definitive Series, which includes designs such as state crests and local flora like pineapples and orchids, printed by De La Rue & Co., and later by Harrison & Sons
