India has one of the richest philatelic histories in the world, spanning nearly 175 years.
Early History
The Scinde Dawk (1852) — India issued one of the world’s first postage stamps, predating even the unified Indian postal system. The Scinde Dawk, used in the Sindh province, is now among the rarest and most valuable stamps globally.
The “Lady McLeod” and early British India issues followed as the colonial postal network expanded across the subcontinent.
Key Eras
British India (1854–1947) — Stamps featured Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, and later George V and VI. The designs were simple and functional, often showing the monarch’s portrait with “India” and a denomination.
Post-Independence (1947–present) — India’s postal service flourished with stamps celebrating:

National leaders (Gandhi, Nehru, Ambedkar)
Wildlife and nature (tigers, elephants, rare birds)
Art, architecture, and heritage sites
Science, space (ISRO missions), and technology
Festivals and cultural traditions
Famous personalities from literature, music, and sport
