Germany Weimar Republic year 1923 1000 mark MNH stamps
The Weimar Republic issued a wide variety of postage stamps during its existence from 1919 to 1933. Initially, the Reichspost continued issuing stamps from the earlier Germania series. In 1919, the first commemorative, airmail, and semipostal stamps were introduced, including a semipostal stamp with a surcharge for war victims
During the hyperinflation period around 1923, the postage stamps reflected the economic turmoil, with denominations reaching up to 50 billion marks. The cost of sending mail skyrocketed, for example, the price of a postcard abroad rose from 15 pfennigs in 1919 to 200 billion marks by December 1923. Stamps from this period include overprints and surcharges on earlier issues, as well as new designs such as the “Number in Circle with Rosette” series and the “Rhein=Ruhr=hilfe” overprints to support regional assistance
The Weimar Republic also incorporated stamps from former German states like Bavaria, which were overprinted with “Deutsches Reich” after Bavaria joined the Reichspostgebiet in 1920. Official administrative stamps (Dienstmarken) were issued for government use, including inflation-period official stamps with very high denominations
