German occupation of Serbia stamp year 1941 20d Airmail MLH

German occupation of Serbia stamp year 1941 20d Airmail MLH

1941, during the German occupation of Serbia the occupying authorities issued a set of airmail stamps made by overprinting existing Yugoslav airmail stamps with a red diagonal “SERBIEN” overprint. These are catalogued (Scott) as Scott 2NC1–2NC10 (often shown as 2NC1–10) and are a common specialty collecting area.

What they look like (quick ID):

  • The base designs are the pre-war Yugoslav airmail airplane/airmail vignette designs (various denominations).
  • A red diagonal overprint reading SERBIEN was applied (sometimes different fonts/shades). Many examples show the plane vignette visible behind the overprint.

When and how they were issued / catalog notes:

  • These overprints date from 1941 (the early occupation issues) and form the first airmail-issue group for occupied Serbia; they appear in standard catalogs and auction listings under the German-occupation Serbia issues. Expect Scott numbers 2NC1–2NC10 and corresponding Michel listings. Variants (double overprints, color shifts, mint/used, hinged/NH) appear and affect value.
