The stamps issued by French Tunisia in 1888 are historically significant as they represent the first official definitive stamp series specifically for the French Protectorate of Tunisia, which was established in 1881. Prior to this, French colonial stamps were used.
There were two main groups of definitive stamps issued in 1888, both featuring the same central design.
General Design and Theme
- Theme: All stamps feature the Coat of Arms of the Bey of Tunis (the ruler under the French Protectorate).
- Inscription: The stamps are inscribed “RÉGENCE DE TUNIS” (Regency of Tunis) and “POSTES”.
- Perforation: Generally 14 x 13 1/2 or similar gauge.
The Two Major 1888 Issues
The stamps are categorized by a slight difference in the background of the central motif:
1. First Issue (Plain/White Background)
- Release Date: July 1, 1888.
- Description: The coat of arms is printed on a plain, unshaded, or white background.
- Scott Catalogue Numbers: This is typically the primary set, listed as Scott Nos. 1-8.
- Denominations (8 values):
- 1 c black
- 2 c reddish brown
- 5 c green
- 15 c blue
- 25 c black on red
- 40 c brick-red
- 75 c carmine
- 5 F violet
2. Second Issue (Shaded/Dotted Background)
- Release Date: October 1888 (and later years).
- Description: The coat of arms appears on a finely shaded or dotted background. These are considered a revised or second printing of the definitive series.
- Scott Catalogue Numbers: This issue typically begins with Scott No. 9 and includes more values/colors.
- Denominations: This set is more extensive and includes denominations such as 1c,2c,5c,10c,15c,20c,25c,35c,40c,75c,1F,2F,and 5F in various colors and paper tints.
As with most 19th-century stamps, higher face-value denominations (like the 5 F) and certain colors or printings (like the 25c and 75 c values in the first set) tend to be more valuable, especially in unused condition.
For precise color variations and current market values, a professional catalogue like the Scott Classic Specialized Catalogue or Michel Catalogue is essential.
