🍁 A Common Confusion: The Maple Leaf Issue
While Scott #53 is the main 3-cent stamp issued in 1897, you might also find references to a very short-lived design known as the “Maple Leaf Issue” (Scott #69).
The 3-cent value of this short set was Carmine (Scott #69), and it was quickly replaced by the Jubilee issue. If your stamp has a different, less elaborate design with prominent maple leaves in all four corners, it may be this much scarcer provisional stamp.
💰 Potential Variety: The Surcharge
There is also an important variety involving a different 3-cent stamp from the Maple Leaves issue which was subsequently surcharged (overprinted) to a 2-cent value in 1899.
- Original Stamp: 3-cent Carmine, Maple Leaves issue.
- Surcharge: Overprinted with a black “2 Cents” to change its value. This was done to use up old stock and avoid confusion with a new 2-cent stamp.
