Austria issued a set of stamps in 1922 that featured seven of their most famous composers. This was one of the first sets of stamps to ever feature composers, and it’s a collectible favorite.
The composers honored on the stamps were:
- Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809): Known as the “Father of the Symphony” and a key figure in the development of classical music.
- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791): A child prodigy and one of the most popular and influential composers of all time.
- Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827): Another hugely influential composer known for his powerful and emotional works.
- Franz Schubert (1797-1828): Another prominent Romantic composer known for his beautiful melodies and Lieder
- Anton Bruckner (1824-1896): A composer of grand and often religious symphonies.
- Johann Strauss II (1825-1899): The “King of the Waltz” and a major figure in Viennese musical culture.
- Hugo Wolf (1860-1903): A leading composer of Lieder, known for his intense and dramatic settings of poetry.
The stamps were only available for a month and were issued in print runs of around 500,000. They are a great piece of musical and philatelic history.
