Jovan Karamata (1902–1967) was a Serbian mathematician known for his contributions to mathematical analysis, particularly in the field of real analysis and the theory of functions. Jovan Karamata was born on December 19, 1902, in Belgrade, Serbia, which was then part of the Kingdom of Serbia. He studied mathematics at the University of Belgrade, where he earned his doctorate in 1928 under the supervision of mathematician Đuro Kurepa.

After completing his studies, Karamata became a professor of mathematics at the University of Belgrade. He made significant contributions to mathematical analysis, particularly in the areas of real analysis, harmonic analysis, and the theory of functions. His research focused on topics such as sum ability theory, Fourier series, and asymptotic analysis.

One of Karamata’s most famous results is known as Karamata’s theorem, which provides conditions for the convergence of sequences of real-valued functions. The theorem is widely used in mathematical analysis and has applications in various areas of mathematics, including probability theory and number theory. In addition to his theorem, Karamata made important contributions to the theory of Laplace transforms, the theory of integral equations, and the theory of summability methods. He published numerous research papers in prestigious mathematical journals throughout his career.
