Yugoslavia year 1996 – Battle of Martinici / folk costumes MNH stamps
The Battle of Martinići was a significant conflict between Montenegrins and the forces of the Pashalik of Scutari, which occurred on the outskirts of the village Martinići near Spuž, Montenegro.
The battle was prompted by the Ottoman governor of the Pashalik of Scutari’s military offensive into Montenegrin territory following the unification of Montenegro with Brda. Two Montenegrin divisions, commanded by Prince-bishop Petar I Petrović-NjegoÅ¡ and guvernadur Jovan Radonjić, comprising 3,000 men, positioned themselves near Martinići in preparation for the impending conflict.
The Ottoman forces, numbering around 18,000 men, advanced towards Martinići from Spuž. For nine days, they encountered guerrilla resistance from the Montenegrins before launching a direct assault on their positions on 11 July.
In the ensuing battle, the Montenegrins fiercely counter-attacked, resulting in significant casualties for the Ottoman forces. This victory, combined with another triumph at Krusi, led to the unification of the Piperi and Bjelopavlići clan regions, which had previously been under Ottoman occupation, with Montenegro.
