Bear (Ursus arctos): Brown bears were once widespread throughout the forested regions of Yugoslavia, particularly in mountainous areas such as the Dinaric Alps. These large mammals are known for their strength and omnivorous diet, which includes berries, nuts, insects, and occasionally larger prey. While brown bears faced habitat loss and hunting pressures in some parts of Yugoslavia, efforts were made to protect and conserve their populations.

Deer (Cervidae): Several species of deer inhabit the forests and grasslands of Yugoslavia, including red deer (Cervus elaphus) and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). Red deer, with their impressive antlers and large size, are native to wooded areas and mountainous regions, while roe deer are more adaptable and can be found in a variety of habitats. Deer are important components of Yugoslavia’s ecosystems, contributing to biodiversity and serving as prey for predators such as wolves and bears.

Goat (Capra aegagrus hircus): Domestic goats have been raised in Yugoslavia for centuries, providing meat, milk, and fiber to local communities. Goats are well adapted to various environments, from mountainous terrain to arid regions, and play a vital role in agricultural practices and rural livelihoods. While wild goats, such as the Balkan chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica), also inhabit the rocky slopes of Yugoslavia’s mountains, domestic goats are more commonly encountered.
