France Prešeren (1800–1849) was a Slovene Romantic poet who is considered the greatest Slovenian poet and one of the central figures in Slovenian literature. He was born in what is now modern-day Slovenia, which was then part of the Austrian Empire. Prešeren’s poetry played a significant role in shaping the cultural and national identity of the Slovene people during the 19th century.
