In November 1952, the Communist Party of Yugoslavia convened its 6th Congress in Zagreb, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s political evolution. This congress, held from November 2 to 7, was attended by 2,022 delegates representing 779,382 party members.

Key Outcomes of the 6th Congress:

  • Renaming the Party: Reflecting a shift in ideological direction, the party was renamed from the “Communist Party of Yugoslavia” to the “League of Communists of Yugoslavia” (Savez komunista Jugoslavije, SKJ). This change signified a move towards a more decentralized and self-managed socialist model.
  • Critique of Bureaucracy: The congress emphasized the need to reduce bureaucratic centralism, viewing it as a remnant of Stalinist practices. There was a strong push towards decentralization and the promotion of workers’ self-management.
  • Workers’ Self-Management: A significant endorsement was given to the policy of workers’ self-management, aiming to empower workers in the decision-making processes within enterprises. This approach was seen as a cornerstone of Yugoslav socialism, distinguishing it from Soviet models.
  • Separation of Party and State Functions: The congress decided that party secretaries would no longer hold corresponding positions in the government. This move was intended to delineate the roles of the party and the state more clearly, reducing the party’s direct involvement in governmental operations.

These decisions marked the peak of liberalization in Yugoslav political life during the 1950s, setting the stage for the unique path of Yugoslav socialism that emphasized decentralization, self-management, and a departure from Soviet orthodoxy.

In philatelic commemoration of this significant event, Yugoslavia issued a set of four postage stamps in 1952. These stamps are of interest to collectors and can be found in various conditions on platforms

The 6th Congress stands as a landmark in Yugoslav history, reflecting the nation’s efforts to forge an independent socialist path distinct from Soviet influence.
