The Kingdom of Yugoslavia was a state in Southeast Europe that existed from 1918 to 1941. It was formed after World War I from the remnants of several collapsed empires, primarily the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire. The kingdom was initially known as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes until 1929 when it was renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
In 1941, Yugoslavia was invaded by Axis forces during World War II, leading to its disintegration. The Axis powers, primarily Germany, Italy, and Hungary, occupied and partitioned the country. This marked the end of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia as a unified state.
During World War II, after the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia in April 1941, the Yugoslav government, along with King Peter II, went into exile, eventually establishing itself in London by June 1941. While in exile, the government issued several postage stamps between 1943 and 1945, primarily for use by Yugoslav governmental offices in London and the Yugoslav merchant navy. These stamps were rarely used on letters, making such postal items exceptionally scarce.
