Tajikistan commemorated its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 by issuing its own stamps. The first series, launched in 1992, featured designs that included national symbols and overprints on existing Soviet stamps due to initial supply limitations. In 1993, additional stamps celebrated Tajik culture, history, and independence, with designs highlighting figures and landmarks such as the mausoleum of Sadriddine Aini, Hissar Fortress, and a map with the national flag. Other series also depicted Tajikistan’s unique wildlife, such as the Himalayan brown bear and snow leopard, emphasizing national heritage and pride during the early years of independence.
However, the Tajik postal service has since reported issues with counterfeit stamps produced by unauthorized sources. Despite these challenges, official stamps remain a key expression of national identity and are recognized by the Universal Postal Union as legitimate memorabilia of Tajikistan’s postal history
