Somalia year 1970 stamp Space MNH **
The first manned mission to land on the Moon was Apollo 11, launched by NASA on July 16, 1969. The spacecraft carried three astronauts: Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins.
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the lunar surface in the Lunar Module named “Eagle” while Michael Collins orbited above in the Command Module named “Columbia”. Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the Moon, famously stating, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Their successful mission marked a significant milestone in human history, demonstrating the technological capabilities of space exploration and fulfilling the goal set by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 to land a man on the Moon and return him safely to Earth before the end of the decade.
