Maria Theresa (1717-1780) was a prominent figure in eighteenth-century Europe, known for her political prowess and influential reign. As the eldest daughter of Emperor Charles VI, she inherited several titles and territories, including Archduchess of Austria, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, and Holy Roman Empress. Maria Theresa was a mother of sixteen children, with ten surviving to adulthood, including Marie Antoinette, who later became the Queen of France.

In depictions, Maria Theresa is often portrayed wearing Coronation robes and the crown of St Stephen, with the order of St Stephen displayed prominently. One notable painting suggests her coronation at St Martin’s Cathedral in Bratislava (then known as Pressburg) in 1741. This event was significant, and Maria Theresa prepared extensively for it, even honing her equestrian skills for the ceremony. It’s worth noting that she assumed masculine titles like “king” and “archduke” to address those who viewed her gender as an obstacle to her rule.

Despite this, historical records also indicate that Maria Theresa was adept at using more traditional feminine attributes to further her political goals. For example, when seeking support for her war efforts, she appealed to the Hungarian people using emotional tactics. Holding her young son and heir in her arms, she wept and promised that he would defend the brave Hungarians as a king. This display of emotion and maternal concern won sympathy and supporters among the populace. Maria Theresa’s ability to adapt her approach to various situations exemplifies her strategic acumen and political astuteness.
