Postojna Cave, discovered in 1818 by local cave guide Luka Čeč, has become the most visited European cave and Slovenia’s top tourist attraction. With over 40 million visitors from around the globe, it boasts 24 kilometers of tunnels, galleries, and majestic halls, making it one of the most diverse cave systems worldwide.
Visitors to Postojna Cave can marvel at its beauty, including the renowned stalagmite formations, and witness the fascinating olm, also known as the baby dragon, if lucky. Notably, it’s the only cave in the world with a double-track railway, offering a unique experience.
The cave is open every day, including holidays, and a guided tour, which includes a train ride and an easy walk, lasts about an hour and a half. Guides provide detailed explanations in Slovenian, Italian, English, or German, while audio guides are available in 17 languages. The visit is suitable for all, including families with children and those with mobility issues, with a constant temperature of 10°C year-round.
During Christmas, the cave hosts the largest living nativity scene underground, adding to its allure. Additionally, the Postojna Cave Park features the EXPO Postojna Cave Karst Exhibition and the Proteus Cave with the Vivarium.
