Lucijan Marija Škerjanc (1900–1973) was a prominent Slovenian composer, conductor, pianist, and music educator. Born on December 17, 1900, in Graz, he pursued his musical studies in Ljubljana, Prague, Vienna, Paris, and Basel. Škerjanc’s career encompassed teaching composition at the Ljubljana Academy of Music, where he also served as chancellor, and directing the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra. He passed away on February 27, 1973, in Ljubljana.

Škerjanc’s compositional style is characterized by late Romanticism, with elements of Expressionism and Impressionism. His extensive oeuvre includes symphonies, concertos, chamber music, piano works, and vocal compositions. Notable works include his cycle of seven nocturnes for piano and the orchestral suite “Gazele,” inspired by the poetry of France Prešeren.

Throughout his career, Škerjanc received numerous accolades, including the Prešeren Award four times (1947, 1948, 1950, and 1971), the Austrian Herder Award, and the French Palmes académiques. In 1949, he became a regular member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
