Sierra Leone year 1872. 1d stamp Red Rose MH
The Sierra Leone 1872 1d Red Rose stamp is a classic stamp from the British colony’s early philatelic history. It features a portrait of Queen Victoria and was printed in rose-red color.
The stamp has a perforation of 12 1/2 and a Crown CC watermark. Mint hinged (MH) copies are available from some dealers. Used examples in good condition can be purchased for around £20.
Varieties of this stamp exist, such as the inverted watermark variety (SG 11w), which can be found used but with small faults. Unused examples in fine condition are valued at £18.
These early Sierra Leone stamps are sought after by collectors of British West African philately. The 1d Red Rose provides an affordable entry point to collect this area, with mint and used stamps.
