The Moraca Monastery, situated on the right bank of the River Moraca near Kolasin, holds significant historical and cultural importance in Montenegro. Built in 1252 by Stefan Nemanja, the son of King Vukasin and grandson of Nemanja, the monastery is adorned with an inscription above the west entrance that bears testament to its royal lineage.

The monastery, resembling a medieval fortress with its high stonewalls, encompasses sleeping quarters that are steeped in legend and mystique, providing a glimpse into the area’s rich history and folklore. One such legend, cherished among the locals, speaks of the monastery’s construction using a special yellow stone sourced from a distant location called Tusine.

According to this tale, the yellow stone was transported over vast distances by the local people, who reportedly formed a column spanning tens of kilometers to pass the stone from hand to hand until it reached the site of the Moraca Monastery. This remarkable feat of collective effort adds to the mystique and allure of the monastery, making it a cherished symbol of resilience and community spirit in Montenegro.
