The Principality of Serbia was a state in Southeastern Europe that existed from 1815 until 1882. It was established after the Second Serbian Uprising against Ottoman rule and marked the beginning of modern Serbia.
The Principality of Serbia emerged as an autonomous region within the Ottoman Empire under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Sultan, but it had its own government and administration. Its territory gradually expanded as Serbian rebels gained control over more regions during the uprisings against Ottoman rule.
In 1867, the Principality of Serbia was internationally recognized as an independent state by the Treaty of London. This recognition solidified Serbia’s status as a sovereign nation.
During its existence, the Principality of Serbia experienced significant political and social changes. It adopted modern institutions and reforms, including the establishment of a constitutional monarchy in 1835. The Principality also saw economic development and cultural revival, with efforts to promote education and national identity.
In 1882, the Principality of Serbia was transformed into the Kingdom of Serbia, marking another milestone in its evolution as a modern nation-state. The Kingdom of Serbia continued to expand its territory and influence in the Balkans, eventually becoming one of the key players in the region leading up to World War I.
