The Kingdom of Serbia was a sovereign state in South-eastern Europe that existed from 1882 until 1918. It emerged from the Principality of Serbia following the adoption of a new constitution and the proclamation of King Milan I as the country’s monarch. The Kingdom of Serbia was established in 1882 when King Milan I, who had previously ruled as Prince Milan of Serbia, proclaimed himself king. This marked Serbia’s transition from a principality to a kingdom. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Kingdom of Serbia actively sought to expand its territory and influence in the Balkans. This included participating in conflicts such as the Serbo-Bulgarian War (1885) and the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), which resulted in the acquisition of additional territory. Under the reign of King Milan I and his successors, Serbia underwent significant modernization efforts and implemented various reforms. These reforms aimed to strengthen the country’s economy, infrastructure, and military capabilities. The Kingdom of Serbia played a significant role in the events leading up to World War I. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in Sarajevo in 1914 triggered a series of events that ultimately led to the outbreak of the war. Serbia found itself at the center of the conflict as it faced invasion by Austria-Hungary. Despite initial successes in repelling the invasion, Serbia suffered significant losses during the war. Following World War I and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires, the Kingdom of Serbia united with other South Slavic territories to form the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, which later became known as the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
