The 1980 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXII Olympiad, were held in Moscow, the capital city of the Soviet Union (present-day Russia), from July 19 to August 3, 1980. The Soviet Union was awarded the hosting rights for the 1980 Olympics in 1974, marking the first time the Olympics were held in a communist country. The Soviet Union viewed the Olympics as an opportunity to showcase its achievements on the international stage. The 1980 Moscow Olympics were marred by a boycott led by the United States and supported by several other Western countries. The boycott was a protest against the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979. As a result, over 60 countries, including the United States, Canada, and most Western European nations, boycotted the Games.
Despite the boycott, a total of 80 nations participated in the 1980 Olympics. This was significantly fewer than the 140 nations that participated in the previous Olympics in Montreal in 1976. The Olympic events were held at various venues in and around Moscow, including the Luzhniki Stadium, which served as the main stadium and hosted the opening and closing ceremonies. Other venues included the Dynamo Stadium, the Olympic Stadium, and the Krylatskoye Sports Complex.
The 1980 Moscow Olympics featured a total of 203 events in 21 sports. Some of the notable sports included athletics, swimming, gymnastics, wrestling, basketball, volleyball, and weightlifting. The Soviet Union dominated the medal tally at the 1980 Olympics, winning a total of 195 medals, including 80 gold, 69 silver, and 46 bronze. East Germany and the host nation, the Soviet Union, were the top two medal-winning countries.
