Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin (1799–1837) was a Russian poet, playwright, and novelist who is considered one of the greatest literary figures in Russian history. Pushkin was born on June 6, 1799, in Moscow, into a noble family with African ancestry on his maternal side. He received an excellent education and showed an early talent for writing poetry. Pushkin’s literary career began in his teenage years, and he gained recognition with his romantic poem “Ruslan and Ludmila” (1820). His works often explored themes of love, freedom, and Russian history. He experimented with various forms, including poetry, drama, and prose. Pushkin’s most famous work is the novel in verse “Eugene Onegin” (1825–1832), which is considered a masterpiece of Russian literature. The novel tells the story of Eugene Onegin, a jaded aristocrat, and his interactions with various characters, including the young and idealistic Tatiana Larina. Through Onegin’s story, Pushkin critiques the values and social norms of Russian society.
