Papua New Guinea year 2010 Kokoda History stamps
In 2010, Papua New Guinea issued a set of postage stamps commemorating the history of the Kokoda Track campaign during World War II. The Kokoda Track was the site of a series of battles between Australian and Japanese forces in 1942, and it has become an important symbol of Australian military history and sacrifice.
The stamp set featured the following designs:
- Depiction of Australian soldiers on the Kokoda Track, highlighting the difficult terrain and conditions they faced.
- Portrait of Brigadier Arnold Potts, who commanded the Australian forces during the early stages of the campaign.
- Illustration of the Papuan carriers, known as “Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels,” who provided vital support to the Australian troops.
- Map of the Kokoda Track, showing the key battles and locations along the route.
The stamps were issued to honor the bravery and sacrifices of the Australian soldiers who fought in the Kokoda campaign, as well as the contributions of the Papuan carriers who assisted them. The Kokoda Track has become a popular hiking destination and a site of pilgrimage for many Australians, who visit to pay their respects to the soldiers who fought and died there.
