Papua New Guinea 2006 Summer institute linguistics MNH
In 2006, Papua New Guinea issued a set of postage stamps to commemorate the 50th anniversary of SIL International (formerly known as the Summer Institute of Linguistics) in the country. SIL International is a nonprofit organization that studies, documents, and assists in developing the world’s lesser-known languages.
The stamp set featured four stamps with the following denominations and designs:
- 0.50 Kina: Depicts a Bible translation workshop
- 1.00 Kina: Shows a linguist working with a native speaker
- 2.70 Kina: Illustrates literacy education
- 3.35 Kina: Features a dictionary of a local language
The stamps were printed using offset lithography and were issued in sheets of 50. They showcased the important work done by SIL International in documenting, preserving, and promoting the diverse languages of Papua New Guinea.
