Norway Olympic Games Lillehammer 1994 full set MNH / canceled
The 1994 Olympic Winter Games were hosted by Lillehammer, Norway. To commemorate this event, Norway issued several special postage stamps:
Definitive Stamp Set:
- Four definitive stamps released in January 1994 with denominations from 2.20kr to 11.00kr
- Designs featured stylized winter sports scenes – skiing, skating, ski jumping
- Printed by Joh. Enschede Security Printers using steel engraving
Souvenir Sheets:
- Two souvenir sheets were issued during the Olympics in February 1994
- One depicted the Olympic mascots Håkon and Kristin in various designs
- The other featured a downhill skier on three different stamps
Olympic Book:
- A special prestige booklet was produced containing 10 different stamps
- The stamps highlighted Olympic imagery like the torch relay, medals, and sports
- The booklet had detailed background information on the Lillehammer games
Cancellations/Postmarks:
- Various special pictorial cancels and machine postmarks were used during the games
- Designs included the Olympic rings, mascots, venue buildings etc.
The Norwegian Olympic stamps from Lillehammer 1994 were very popular with sports topicalists and Winter Olympics collectors. The creative designs, use of engraving, and collectable souvenir formats generated philatelic interest worldwide. The issues remain classics of the 1990s Olympic stamp era.
