Northern Germany Confederation stamps – NDP year 1868 set Used
The Northern Germany Confederation, which existed from 1867 to 1871, issued its own postage stamps starting in 1868. These stamps were introduced to unify and standardize postal services across the member states, which included regions like Prussia, Saxony, and Mecklenburg-Schwerin, among others.
The first stamps of the North German Confederation were printed in two main districts: the Northern District using the currency of groschen and the Southern District using kreuzer. Notable issues from this period include the 1 groschen stamp from the Northern District and the 1 kreuzer stamp from the Southern District.
These stamps replaced those of individual member states, such as Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, which had previously issued their own stamps until their postal systems were integrated into the North German Confederation’s system in 1868 (Smithsonian Postal Museum).
If you’re looking to collect or view these stamps, resources like the National Postal Museum and various stamp catalogues can provide detailed images and historical context.
