Macedonia year 1993 – Resurrection of Ilinden ☀ MNH (**)

The Ilinden Uprising, also known as the Ilinden–Preobrazhenie Uprising, was a significant event in the history of Macedonia and the wider region. It took place in 1903 and was an attempt by Macedonian nationalists, with support from the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO), to overthrow Ottoman rule and establish an independent Macedonian state.

The uprising began on the feast day of St. Elijah (Ilinden) and continued until the feast day of the Transfiguration (Preobrazhenie). Despite initial successes in capturing several towns and villages, the uprising was ultimately suppressed by Ottoman forces. The Ottoman response was brutal, leading to widespread violence and massacres against Macedonian civilians.

The Ilinden Uprising is considered a crucial moment in the struggle for Macedonian independence and has become a symbol of national identity and resistance. The legacy of Ilinden continues to resonate in North Macedonia today, with the anniversary of the uprising celebrated as a national holiday known as “Ilinden” or “Macedonian Uprising Day.”
