Liechtenstein year 1989 Fauna postage stamps set MNH

In 1989, Liechtenstein issued a set of four postage stamps featuring the fauna of the small principality. Here are the details:

The set consists of four stamps, each depicting a different animal:

  • 35 Rappen – Alpine Salamander (Salamandra atra)
  • 50 Rappen – Stoat or Ermine (Mustela erminea)
  • 80 Rappen – Hazel Grouse (Bonasa bonasia)
  • 90 Rappen – Red Deer (Cervus elaphus)

The stamps were designed by Austrian artist Wolfgang Seidel, who is known for his detailed, lifelike depictions of wildlife on stamps for various countries.

Each stamp features a highly detailed, realistic illustration of the animal in its natural habitat. The designs skillfully capture the unique characteristics and beauty of each species.

Inscriptions on the stamps include “Fürstentum Liechtenstein” (Principality of Liechtenstein) and the denomination value. The scientific name of each animal is also printed on the stamps.

The Alpine Salamander and Stoat are both native to the alpine regions of Liechtenstein and play important roles in the local ecosystem. The Hazel Grouse and Red Deer are also found in the forests and mountains of the principality.

This fauna set was part of Liechtenstein’s long-running series of stamps featuring the country’s natural heritage, including various plants, animals, and landscapes.

The stamps were printed using offset lithography by the Austrian State Printing Works in Vienna, known for producing high-quality stamps for Liechtenstein and other countries.
