Iran – Persia postage stamps year 1900-1920

Between 1900 and 1920, Persia (modern-day Iran) issued several notable postage stamp series that largely reflect the country’s royal and national symbols as well as political changes:

  • The Lion and Sun Issue (1902-1906) was prominent, featuring the traditional Lion and Sun emblem of Persia. These stamps were printed in multiple denominations (1 chahi to 50 kran) and colors, mostly by typography on unwatermarked paper.
  • Mozaffar ad-Din Shah Issue (1902-1906) featured portraits of the then ruler, with many color and denomination variations.
  • Mohammad Ali Shah Issue (1907-1909) followed, bearing the portrait of the new Shah after Mozaffar ad-Din Shah’s death.
  • Ahmad Shah Issue (1910-1925) showed the last Qajar dynasty ruler’s portrait, continuing the tradition of varying colors and denominations.
  • Special issues included the Provisional Government stamps in 1915 with overprints in Persian and French, Coronation stamps commemorating Ahmad Shah’s coronation in 1915, and 1919 Overprints marking postal anniversaries.

Many of these stamps were printed in places like Russia, France, and Belgium, reflecting international printing engagements. Persian stamps of this era are characterized by intricate designs featuring lions, calligraphic inscriptions, and royal portraits. Collecting these stamps can be challenging due to many reprints and forgeries that exist. They are highly valued among philatelists interested in Middle Eastern history and arts.
