Grenada year 1883 – 1d Carmine postage stamp
Grenada issued a 1d carmine postage stamp in 1883. The stamp features a portrait of Queen Victoria inspired by Alfred Edward Chalon’s painting, known as the “Chalon head” design. The 1d carmine stamp was part of a series that also included higher denominations like 2d, 2½d, 3d, 4d, 6d, 8d, 1sh, and 2sh. These stamps were printed in purple and the numeral or denomination was printed in a contrasting color. The Chalon head design was used on many British colonial stamps from the 1850s to 1912. Grenada’s first stamps in 1860 featured this portrait, and it reappeared on higher values in 1883.The 1883 Grenada 1d carmine stamp is catalogued as Scott 33. It is an important stamp for collectors of Grenada and British Commonwealth issues from the Victorian era.
