Germany Weimar Republic postage stamps year 1922 25m MNH
In 1922, as the Weimar Republic entered a period of rising inflation, several stamps with a 25 Mark (25m) denomination were issued. Depending on the design and watermark, your stamp likely belongs to one of the two series described below.
1. The “Miner” (Bergarbeiter) Design
The most common 25 Mark stamp from 1922 features a Miner at work. This design was part of the “Workers” definitive series that began replacing the Germania stamps.
| Feature | Details |
| Michel Number | Mi. 242 |
| Scott Number | Scott 191 |
| Color | Olive-brown (shades range from light to dark) |
| Design | A miner swinging a pickaxe underground. |
| Watermark | Waffle / Network (Wz. 2) |
| Perforation | Comb 14 x 14¼ |
| Status | Very common. Millions were printed to meet rising postal rates. |
2. The “Wood Pigeon” (Holztaube) Design
This is a larger, more artistic design often used for higher postage or airmail-style rates during the transition into hyperinflation.
| Feature | Details |
| Michel Number | Mi. 217 |
| Scott Number | Scott 182 |
| Color | Blackish-ultramarine |
| Design | A wood pigeon in flight. |
| Watermark | Lozenges (Wz. 1) |
| Note | Released in late 1922. A later 1923 version (Mi. 265) exists in Dark Sienna, so color is the best way to distinguish them. |
Collecting Tips: Surcharges
Because the value of the Mark was falling so fast, many 25 Mark stamps were later overprinted with much higher values in 1923. Look for bold black text stamped over the original design:
- “20 Tausend” (20,000) on 25 Mark
- “25 Tausend” (25,000) on 25 Mark
- “500 Mark” on 25 Mark (Rhein-Ruhr assistance)
