German Weimar Republic stamps year 1919 Airmail set – MNH
The postage stamps from the Weimar Republic during 1921 to 1924 not only served postal purposes but also mirrored the socio-economic conditions of Germany at that time. The designs varied significantly, influenced by cultural movements and the pressing realities of hyperinflation that characterized this tumultuous period in German history.
In November 1919, during the Weimar Republic era, Germany issued its inaugural airmail stamps, known as the “Deutsche Flugpost” series. Designed by Mathey and printed at the Government Printing Office, these stamps featured a posthorn and a biplane, symbolizing the advent of airmail services. The series comprised two denominations:
- 10 Pfennig: Red-orange color.
- 40 Pfennig: Black opal-green with a bluish-green hue.
Both stamps were produced using typography, printed in sheets of 5×10, without any watermark, and had perforations measuring 14¾:14¼.
These stamps not only represent a significant development in postal history but also reflect the innovative spirit of the Weimar Republic during the early 20th century.
