It gained full independence from France on August 15, 1960, becoming the Republic of the Congo. The capital of the French Middle Congo was Brazzaville, named after Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza. The country is bordered by the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the east, the Central African Republic to the north, Cameroon and Gabon to the west, and a small strip of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest.
