The French Middle Congo (Moyen-Congo in French) was a French colony in Equatorial Africa that existed from 1910 to 1958. It was one of the four territories that made up French Equatorial Africa, along with Gabon, Ubangi-Shari (now the Central African Republic), and Chad.The origins of the Middle Congo derived from the establishment in 1880 by the French explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza of a station at Ntamo. From 1934, the Middle Congo was directly administered by the governor-general of French Equatorial Africa.In 1958, the Middle Congo became an autonomous republic within the French Community and was renamed the Congo Republic. It gained full independence from France on August 15, 1960, becoming the Republic of the Congo.The capital of the French Middle Congo was Brazzaville, named after Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza. The country is bordered by the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the east, the Central African Republic to the north, Cameroon and Gabon to the west, and a small strip of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest.
