France year 1938 stamp World Cup Soccer Championship ☀ MNH**
The 1938 FIFA World Cup, held in France, was the third edition of the tournament and the last before World War II interrupted international sporting events. France was selected as the host nation for the 1938 World Cup, marking the first time the tournament was held in a country outside of South America. France was chosen over Argentina and Germany. A total of 15 teams participated in the tournament, with Italy being the defending champions from the 1934 World Cup in Italy. The 16th spot originally reserved for India was given up due to travel issues.
The format of the tournament was similar to the 1934 edition, with knockout rounds from the quarterfinals onwards. The 15 teams were divided into four groups, with the winners of each group advancing to the knockout stage along with the best runner-up. Italy successfully defended their title, defeating Hungary 4-2 in the final held at the Stade Olympique de Colombes in Paris on June 19, 1938. Italy’s triumph made them the first team to win consecutive World Cup titles.
