Estonia postage stamps year 1920/28 Used
The Estonian postage stamps issued between 1920 and 1928 cover a rich and varied period in the young republic’s history, transitioning from the early post-independence currency (Penni/Marka) to the stable Kroon currency in 1928.
Used stamps from this era are highly collectible and fall into several key series:
🌟 Key Stamp Series (1920–1928)
| Issue/Series Name | Years | Key Features & Designs | Currency |
| “Tallinn Skyline” Definitives | 1920–1924 | Features a stylized view of the Tallinn Old Town skyline, including the church spires. These were definitive (regular-issue) stamps and are very common, though high values or certain printings are more sought after. | Marka (M.) |
| Airmail (Lendpost) | 1920–1923 | These included stamps featuring aircraft or were surcharged to meet airmail rates. The 1920 Airmail issue (MiNr. 14) is a notable triangle-shaped stamp featuring a biplane. | Marka (M.) |
| “Eesti Vabariik” Definitives | 1922–1925 | A series of definitive stamps with simpler designs, featuring a large denomination figure in an oval or rectangular frame, sometimes with the inscription EESTI VABARIIK (Republic of Estonia). | Marka (M.) |
| Map of Estonia | 1923–1924 | A short-lived definitive issue featuring a map of Estonia. There are various values and colors, including the 100M and 300M high-value stamps. | Marka (M.) |
| Charity & Semi-Postal Issues | Various | Stamps issued with a surcharge to support causes like the Red Cross (e.g., 1921, 1922, 1926 issues) or Welfare (e.g., 1927 issue). These often have two values listed: the postal fee plus the charity donation. | Marka (M.) |
| New Currency Definitives | 1928 | Beginning in 1928, a new series was issued with the new currency: Senti and Kroon. The first definitive series, introduced on September 24, 1928, features the Heraldic Lion (from the Coat of Arms) and marks the end of the Marka era. | Senti (S.) / Kroon (Kr.) |
🪙 Currency Note:
The period spans two different currency systems for postage:
- 1920–1927: Denominations were in Penni (P.) and Marka (M.). (100 Penni = 1 Marka).
- 1928 and after: Denominations were in Senti (S.) and Kroon (Kr.) (100 Senti = 1 Kroon), following the currency reform of 1928. The stamps released from September 1928 onwards reflect this change.
Used stamps from this period are generally very common, though high-value Marka stamps, stamps on cover, or stamps with rare cancellations are more valuable.
