Egypt UAR year 1962 celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Revolution
In 1963, the United Arab Republic (Egypt) celebrated the 11th Anniversary of the Revolution of July 23, 1952. Unlike the expansive 7-stamp set for the 1960 Olympics, the 1963 Revolution issue focused on the consolidation of the new political order under the Arab Socialist Union (ASU).
1. The 11th Anniversary Stamp Set
The primary commemorative set was issued on July 23, 1963. The central theme of these stamps is the emblem of the Arab Socialist Union, which was the sole political party in Egypt at the time.
| Value (Millièmes) | Subject / Design | Catalog No. (Scott) |
| 10 M. | ASU Emblem (Torch, Wrench, Wheat) | #587 |
| 50 M. | ASU Emblem (High-value variant) | Part of Souvenir Sheet |
Design Details:
- The Arab Socialist Union emblem features a combination of symbols representing the “working forces of the people”: a torch (knowledge/enlightenment), a wrench (industry), and wheat stalks (agriculture).
- The stamps are often printed in a modern, multicolor photogravure style typical of the early 1960s Egyptian press.
2. The Souvenir Sheet (Miniature Sheet)
For this anniversary, the UAR issued a significant souvenir sheet that remains a favorite for regional collectors.
- Catalog Number: Scott #588 (Michel Block 14).
- Format: The sheet contains a single 50 Millième stamp.
- Variants: It was issued in two distinct formats:
- Perforated: Standard version for general collectors.
- Imperforate: A version without perforations, which is generally more valuable and harder to find in pristine condition.
- Visuals: The sheet includes the central ASU emblem surrounded by decorative text and the dates “1952–1963.”
3. Other Significant 1963 Issues
The Revolution Anniversary was the centerpiece of the year, but several other sets from 1963 are often collected alongside it:
- Freedom from Hunger: A 2-stamp set (10M and 35M) issued in March.
- Preservation of Nubian Monuments: Continuing the massive international campaign to save Abu Simbel and other temples from the Aswan High Dam floodwaters.
- Al-Azhar University: A set commemorating the historic Islamic institution.
