Denmark postage stamps year 2007 International Polar Year MNH MSS
In 2007, Denmark participated in the 4th International Polar Year (IPY 2007–2008), a global scientific initiative. Because of Denmark’s constitutional ties to Greenland, this philatelic issue was part of a larger, internationally coordinated effort.
1. The “Galathea 3” & Polar Year Souvenir Sheet
Denmark’s primary contribution to the IPY theme was a souvenir sheet that linked the Polar Year with the Galathea 3 Expedition (a major Danish circumnavigation and research voyage).

2. The Joint Issue Context
Denmark’s release was part of a Joint Issue involving eight nations: the US, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Greenland, and Denmark.
- Common Themes: While each country had unique designs, they all featured the official IPY logo and focused on polar science.
- The “Polar Year Arctic 2007” Album: A prestigious limited-edition album was released containing the stamps from all eight participating countries. This is highly sought after by “Joint Issue” collectors.
3. Related Danish Polar Issues (Greenland)
Collectors of Danish stamps often include Greenland issues due to their close administrative relationship. In 2007, Greenland (POST Greenland) issued its own IPY stamps:
- The Polar Bear Issue: A 10.00 DKK stamp featuring a polar bear on pack ice.
- The Science Issue: Stamps depicting ice core drilling and satellite monitoring of the ice caps.
