Collector Notes

  • Watermarks: The set was printed on paper with the “DDR and Posthorn” watermark. There are two types: Type 1 (5mm high letters) and Type 2 (6mm high letters). Type 2 is the most common for this issue.
  • Historical Context: This set was issued to support the development of the Tierpark Berlin, which had opened just a year earlier in 1955 in the grounds of Friedrichsfelde Palace as East Germany’s answer to the West’s Berlin Zoo.
