Cuban crocodiles, scientifically known as Crocodylus rhombifer, are a species of crocodile native to Cuba. Cuban crocodiles primarily inhabit freshwater habitats such as swamps, marshes, rivers, and lakes. They are also found in brackish coastal mangroves and estuaries. Historically, Cuban crocodiles were widespread throughout Cuba, but their range has significantly diminished due to habitat loss and human activities. Today, they are primarily found in isolated pockets of suitable habitat in western and central Cuba. Cuban crocodiles are relatively small compared to other crocodile species, with males typically reaching lengths of 2.5 to 3 meters (8 to 10 feet) and females being slightly smaller. They have a distinctive olive-green coloration with black markings on their body and tail. Cuban crocodiles also have a bony ridge behind their eyes, giving them a unique appearance. Cuban crocodiles are primarily nocturnal hunters, preying on fish, crustaceans, small mammals, birds, and occasionally larger prey such as deer or livestock. They are known for their intelligence and agility, using stealth and ambush tactics to catch their prey.
