Croatia year 2016 stamps full set Croatian Inventions Propeller-driven Torpedo and Pen with ink
Propeller-driven Torpedo: The propeller-driven torpedo, also known as the “Whitehead torpedo,” was invented by Ivan Lupis, a Croatian inventor, in the 19th century. In 1866, Lupis developed the concept of a self-propelled torpedo equipped with a compressed-air engine and a propeller, which could be launched from a ship to target enemy vessels. This invention revolutionized naval warfare by providing a long-range, underwater weapon capable of delivering a powerful explosive payload to enemy ships.
Pen with Ink: While the invention of the pen with ink dates back to ancient civilizations, the modern fountain pen as we know it was significantly improved by Slavoljub Eduard Penkala, a Croatian inventor, in the early 20th century. In 1907, Penkala patented the first mechanical pencil in Austria-Hungary, and in 1906, he patented a fountain pen with a built-in inkwell, which allowed for a more convenient and portable writing instrument. This invention paved the way for the development of modern fountain pens, which continue to be popular writing tools today.
These inventions, the propeller-driven torpedo, and the pen with ink, demonstrate Croatia’s contribution to both military technology and everyday convenience. They highlight the ingenuity and creativity of Croatian inventors in various fields of innovation.
