The history of Pag Island and its significance.

Pag Island is one of Croatia’s most unique islands in the Adriatic Sea. Unlike other islands, it has a relatively low elevation. Much of the island features a barren, almost moonscape landscape, especially on the side exposed to Velebit Mountain. The ferocious bura wind sweeps across the island, bringing salt from the sea and rendering the soil almost lifeless.

Here’s a brief historical overview of Pag Island:

  1. Early Settlements: Evidence suggests that settlements existed on Pag Island as far back as the Stone Age. The Liburnians, an Illyrian tribe, were present on the island in the 2nd century BC. The Romans also made their presence felt in the 1st century BC, although the island wasn’t particularly prominent at that time. The name “Pag” stems from the Latin word “pagus,” meaning village.
  2. Venetian Rule: Pag Island, along with its neighboring islands and much of Dalmatia, came under Venetian rule from 1409 onward. The island’s main town, Pag Town (formerly known as Cissa), was moved to its present-day location in the 15th century due to the prosperous salt business. Nearby Stari Grad town faced increasing attacks from rival salt producers in Zadar and Rab.
  3. Austrian Empire: In 1797, Pag became part of the Austrian Empire, which also included much of the Croatian coast. The island’s economy thrived during this period, especially in salt production.
  4. 20th Century: Pag Island became part of Yugoslavia in 1918. During World War II, it was occupied first by Italy and then by Germany. The island was liberated on April 5, 1945, and it once again became part of Yugoslavia.

Additionally, in 1993, Croatia issued a stamp commemorating the 550th anniversary of Pag Town. The stamp celebrates the rich history and cultural heritage of this beautiful island.
