The People’s Republic of China (PRC) issued a set of two commemorative postage stamps in 1957 to celebrate the completion of the Great Yangtze River Bridge at Wuhan.

This bridge was a landmark achievement, being the first permanent bridge to span the Yangtze River at Wuhan, and a crucial link for the Beijing-Guangzhou railway line.

The stamp set is generally catalogued under the series heading C43 in Chinese stamp catalogues, and Scott #319-320 in the Scott Catalogue.

Significance

The Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, opened on October 15, 1957 (with the stamps issued shortly before), was a point of national pride and a symbol of modern construction and infrastructure development in the new PRC. Its completion eliminated the need for ferries to cross the river, which had previously created a major bottleneck for the main north-south railway.
