Bulgaria issued a commemorative set of postage stamps in 1962 for the 15th Chess Olympiad (also known as the World Team Chess Championship), which was held in Varna, Bulgaria from September 15 to October 10, 1962.

The main issue consisted of a set of 5 stamps, which feature various chess pieces on the designs:

  1. 1 stotinka: Depicting the Bishop
  2. 2 stotinki: Depicting the Rook
  3. 3 stotinki: Depicting the Queen
  4. 13 stotinki: Depicting the Knight
  5. 20 stotinki: Depicting the Pawn (The King was notably the only major piece not featured in the set).

In addition to the main set of 5 perforated stamps, there were also:

  • An imperforated set of the same 5 stamps.
  • A souvenir sheet (block) which contained a single stamp (often featuring a different design or value than the main set).
